Five Izakaya Bar – Japanese style afterwork drinks in business district of Singapore

The Japanese Tachinomi Izakaya concept of “stand and drink” bars, where drinks and snacks are served cheaply and quickly, is very popular with the salarymen of Tokyo. The FIVE Bar is the first such bar to open in Singapore- conveniently located in the heart of the financial district of downtown Singapore- and directly opposite the waterfront of Clifford Pier and the Fullerton Bay Hotel. At FIVE Bar a wide range of drinks are on offer- all day- for SGD5.00 each– including Asahi draft beer, house wines and spirits, sake, shochu and choya.

The FIVE Bar is located at street level of an office tower facing the main road- with views across to the Singapore waterfront buildings. With a wide glass and open frontage to the street, the space inside is quite spaciou, and an unusual “feature” is a pair of converging escalators (not functional) rising up nearly five levels on either side of the bar. The indoor area has a good number of bar tables and stools for customers wishing to sit. Perched up behind the bar is a small stage for the live musicians who perform nightly. The decoration of the bar is contemporary and uncluttered, with some Japanese themed decorative items adding to the character of the bar.

The bar offerings also include special cocktails for SGD12.00 such as “Sake-Hito”– combination of sake and mojito; “Choya-tini”– Choya Shiso & dry vermouth & orange twist. The wide range of bar snacks- also priced at SGD5.00 – include favorites such as “Ebi Fry”– fluffy battered prawns served with mayo & Japanese pickles, and “Chicken Karaage”– crispy chicken pieces served with mayo & Japanese pickles.

The FIVE Bar , since opening in May 2010, has become a popular venue downtown for both office workers and visitors to chill out after a busy day and enjoy attractively priced drinks and snacks, before heading on to other bars or clubs.
