Situated in the historic Dempsey Hills area of Singapore, the REDDOT Brewhouse occupies a restored 1860’s military barracks building, set amid lush tropical foliage. The expansive space provides both for indoor dining and bar, and outdoor tables on two levels of garden terraces. Accessed from the street level carpark via steps set up into the hill- the entrance lobby provides an open view through full height glass walls of the working micro brewery. The main building itself is open on all sides to the outdoor garden areas, but provides welcome relief from the tropical sunshine during daylight hours.
RedDot Brewhouse, as an independently owned and operated microbrewery, is itself the culmination of the passion for beer brewing that first inspired the owner and head brewer (Ernest Ng) more than a decade ago. The brewery equipment and beers are the result of a long process of both learning and experimentation that have now materialised into the highly regarded microbrewery and restaurant at Dempsey Hill, plus a second outlet that recently opened in the restored shophouses of the Boat Quay area of central Singapore.
The concept for RedDot Brewhouse was to combine the pleasures of drinking freshly brewed, natural beers, with an excellent dining experience, set in a peaceful and relaxing indoor / outdoor garden environment. As a functioning micro brewery, the beers of course take centre stage. All the beers brewed are served completely unfiltered and unprocessed, directly from the gleaming stainless steel brewing vats. The individual beer styles are mostly based on the types of beer popular wherever quality beer is appreciated- and are the result of a delicate composition of ingredients providing unique and original flavours. Amongst the most popular beers at RedDot are the “Summer Ale”, “Czech Pilsner”, “Weizen” (wheat beer), and “English Ale“. A novelty beer is the “Monster Green Lager” – a green colored pilsner.
The “Summer Ale” has an emphasis on hops flavours and is designed for easy, refreshing drinking for hot & humid days and evenings. It pairs well with most Western dishes.
“English Ale” is a more traditional, full bodied, English style beer- with combinations of smoky, spicy and hop-py and malt flavours. The color is a rich ruby red.
The “Weizen” is a wheat beer with a golden, cloudy appearance. Light-bodied, somewhat fruity and with a light spicy flavour, it is easy to drink and pairs well with Asian and seafood dishes.
The food offerings at RedDot range from all day bar snacks, to an extensive menu of Modern European cuisine- with some Asian influences and flavours, plus an outdoors Charcoal Grill for barbequed meats and seafood.
One of the more popular bar snacks are the “Spicy Zing Wing & Drumlets”– spicy pieces of fried chicken served in wicker baskets.
The “Brewmaster Salad” consists of mixed mesclun leaves with beer marinated quinoa, pickles, sliced red onions, poached sausages & cheese.
One of the delicious main courses is the “Pan Roasted Cod Fillet” – a delicate cod fillet with baked scallop on half shell with mushroom risotto
And one of the most popular choices is the “RedDot Beef Burger” – fresh ground beef, crisp bacon, cheddar cheese, caramelized onions, tomatoes, lettuce and special sauce and served with french fries.
The extensive menu also includes salads, pizzas, pastas, burgers and classic main courses, plus the popular Charcoal Grill- selected sausages, steaks and seafood. And to finish off the meals, if there is any room left after the beers, there are a number of tempting desserts- the “Whisky Chocolate Melt Cake” being a specialty.
The RedDot Brewhouse, in the few years since opening, has become a very popular venue for both local residents and visitors to Singapore to enjoy freshly brewed beers, complimented by an excellent dining experience. The service staff are attentive and friendly- and helpful in explaining the menu options. The setting in the restored military barracks building and luxuriant tropical gardens provide the perfect environment for a memorable lunches or dinners, or perhaps just enjoying the beers and company of friends!
