OSKAR Bistro opened in March this year at the northern end of Sukhumvit Soi 11, in a street level space sandwiched between Citadines Serviced Apartments and the hip Bed SupperClub. This section of Soi 11 has been home to some of Bangkok’s most popular, sophisticated nightclubs for a number of years- with the aforementioned Bed Supperclub, Q Bar and more recently NEST Rooftop Lounge, all having a strong following within the higher -end nightlife scene. OSKAR Bistro now adds to the gradual gentrification of the area with it’s own style of casual yet sophisticated dining and drinks. The immediate popularity of OSKAR Bistro is testament to the largely unsatisfied demand in Bangkok for this style of venue. The clever blending of a casual bistro style eatery, with a stylish bar environment, provides the more discerning patrons in Bangkok with an ideal place to have an early evening cocktail, meet friends for dinner, or to enjoy some pre-clubbing libations. No doubt the French influence of the partners/managers contributes to the successful execution of this formula- and OSKAR with it’s “je ne sais quoi” is attracting a good crowd of mostly younger expat executives, together with some tourist visitors and locals.
The design of OSKAR draws on an industrial palette of colors, materials and finishes- combining raw concrete, embossed sheet metal, recycled timbers and some exposed brickwork, with a full length glass facade, soft fawn coloured upholstery on the bistro dining chairs, and white washed walls and ceiling. Dark timber bar furniture provides a contrast to the bleached timber panels that sheath the bar.
The street frontage of OSKAR has a full length covered terrace area with numerous small tables and chairs- and is ideal for those wishing to soak up the local atmosphere of the street. Entering OSKAR through the large heavy metal doorway, the bar dominates the interior space, and with the “U shaped” configuration, provides seating for patrons along all three sides, with the open views across the room- which is always great for people watching. The centrepiece of the bar is the double -sided back bar display for the liquor bottles- and highlighted by the striking, LED lighted “mosiac/ sparkle” style signs of the OSKAR logo facing out on either side of the bar. Several 2-seater high tables are placed along the front full height glass facade, and further inside, on the back side wall are two larger booth style tables , and red velvet sofa setting. Across from the front of the bar, there is a separate bistro section, with comfortable chairs upholstered in a fawn colored material and with dark timber tables. A small exposed brick DJ booth sits at one end of this section- and here the resident DJ plays a laid back variety of tunes- moving more upbeat as the evening progresses.
Diners at OSKAR can choose from an attractively priced bistro menu featuring an eclectic variety of popular comfort foods- the French style house special “Cocottes”, wood oven fired pizzas, salads, burgers, and grilled marinated skewers of meat and seafood. Bar snacks, platters, and desserts complete the offerings. There are weekly blackboard specials, and daily from 4:30pm ~ 7:30pm is APERTIVO- with free tapas at the bar for customers.
