Live cooking stations prepare the best of authentic Malaysian cuisine in stylish indoor/outdoor restaurant
November 12th, 2012
The much anticipated August 2012 opening of the Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur marked the first new 5 star luxury hotel to open in the Malaysian capitol for 10 years, and with it two of the featured interactive cooking style restaurants for which Grand Hyatt are famous for throughout Asia. On the upper 38th level of the hotel- directly below the top, 39th floor lobby- is the elegant, chic restaurant, lounge and wine bar- THIRTY8, and on the ground level of the building, occupying an expansive indoor and outdoor space is JP teres – a vibrant, cosmopolitan restaurant that serves choice selections representing the diverse ethnic origins of authentic Malaysian cuisine. The three main ethnic cuisines of Malaysia- Malay, Chinese and Indian are all represented- with a series of open kitchens showcasing the preparation of the dishes. Diners have a choice of eating in the air-conditioned comfort of the indoor space, or on the outdoor garden terrace- cooled by evening breezes and large overhead fans.
Located in the heart of the commercial centre of KL- and directly adjoining the Convention Centre at KLCC- the hotel is convenient to the major shopping malls and office towers. JP teres restaurant can be accessed internally from the ground floor reception lobby of the hotel building, or from the street level entries to the outdoor terrace. JP teres opens daily from 11:30 am, and is already popular as a lunch destination for both hotel guests and the nearby office workers, and as a delightful place to enjoy relaxed after-work drinks and dinner in the evenings.

The layout of JP teres features a voluminous indoor space with a double height glass facade facing out onto an outdoor walled terrace garden. The indoor space is configured in a long “L” shape, with the open kitchens aligned across the back wall and facing out over the dining tables. The design has a contemporary chic feel of understated sophistication, with the vibrant orange-red marble counters elegantly coordinating with the orange-brown palette of the soft furnishings. Dark timber floors contrast with the light beige/ white tones of the walls and ceilings. The indoor dining spaces are broken up into different zones across the floor space, with some booth seating in the centre section. A staircase leads to an upper level space directly above the entrance foyer that functions as a luxurious private dining room and lounge.
Full height glass doors open out from the indoor space to the large outdoor terrace. The central feature of the terrace is the prominent bar that protrudes out from the dining room facade. On either side of the bar are various seating arrangements- with dining tables interspersed with lounge seating. The entire terrace is enclosed within a curving stone wall, with soothing running water features, and tropical plants providing an oasis of tranquility and privacy in the heart of the city.
The cooking station counters are fashioned from sheets of red marble.
