Spectacular views and fine dining on the rooftop of historic building on the Bund Shanghai
July 29th, 2013
Standing at the northern end of Shanghai’s famed Bund riverfront promenade, The House of Roosevelt occupies one of the many grand buildings that were constructed in the 1920’s along Shanghai’s waterfront as bold statements of wealth and prestige. Originally constructed in 1922 as the China headquarters for the famed Hong Kong trading company Jardine Matheson- the eight storey, granite-faced mansion was designed in a modern Renaissance / neo-classical style with arched windows, and colonnades extending three stories across the facade. Acquired in 2008 by the investment firm controlled by descendants of two famous American Presidents- Theodore and Franklin D. Roosevelt, the Roosevelt family company restored the magnificent building, faithfully recreating its former grandeur- including the broad marble and brass staircases, marble and timber paneling, and grandly proportioned rooms. The eight storey building now houses a series of commercial and retail operations- including ground floor retail, and a collection of venues under the House of Roosevelt banner- the rooftop Roosevelt Sky Bar; 8th floor Roosevelt Sky Restaurant; 3rd floor Roosevelt Club (private members-only club); and the 2nd floor Roosevelt Wine Cellar Restaurant.
On the 8th floor, The Roosevelt Sky Restaurant offers a fine dining experience of modern European cuisine, paired with an exceptional range of wines from the Roosevelt cellars on the 2nd floor. Spanning the entire width of the building- and facing out over the Bund and Huangpu River- the restaurant has three separate sections- two outdoor terraces- on the north and south sides of the floorspace, and an intimate indoor dining room set behind the south terrace dining area. The two terrace dining areas feature climate controlled enclosures with full height plexiglass walls providing unobstructed views across the river.
The Roosevelt culinary team of highly trained chefs cook from an extensive selection of freshly imported premium seafood, meats, and charcuterie, plus seasonally fresh market produce. Menu selections include air-flown oysters from France, Japan and Australia; seafood from Europe, Canada, Japan, New Zealand; and prime Australian wagyu beef. Among the notable dishes are- appetizers such as French Blue Lobster & Scallop Carpaccio, with black olive oil and deep-fried cauliflower; Shanghai Smoked Fish; and main courses of Home Roasted Vietnamese Suckling Pig, with Razor Clam, seasonal vegetables and apple-potato mash; and the Australian Wagyu Tomahawk- impressively sized at 1,500 gms- to serve 3-4 people- carved at the table side- and served with grilled vegetables and baby potatoes and a choice of sauces and mustard.
And on the open roof top space directly above the Roosevelt Sky Restaurant, the Roosevelt Sky Bar offers some of the best views in Shanghai- with panoramic vistas over the entire length of the Bund, Huangpu River, and the dramatic Pudong skyscapers on the opposite banks of the river. Attractive Happy Hour promotions make the Roosevelt Sky Bar a very popular destination for early evening drinks, and later in the evenings resident DJs add a vibrant edge to the atmosphere. A well-stocked bar offers a full range of refreshing drinks including delicious cocktails, fine champagnes and wines, plus premium spirits and imported beers.
The Roosevelt Sky Restaurant is open daily- serving lunch and dinner between 11:30 am and 1:00 am. Table reservations are recommended. And the Roosevelt Sky Bar operates on the same hours as the restaurant, spaces for private parties can also be accommodated on the rooftop.
