Extraordinary 4,000+ label wine cellar within grandeur of waterfront Shanghai heritage building
July 30th, 2013
Located at the north end of the famous Bund waterfront in Shanghai,The House of Roosevelt occupies one of the original grand buildings that were constructed in the 1920′s. The building at No.27 The Bund was constructed in 1922 as the Chinese headquarters of the famed Hong Kong trading company Jardine Matheson- the eight storey, granite-faced mansion designed in a modern Renaissance / neo-classical style with arched windows, and colonnades extending three stories across the facade. Recently re-developed in 2008 by the investment firm controlled by descendants of two famous American Presidents- Theodore and Franklin D. Roosevelt, the Roosevelt family company has restored the magnificent building, faithfully recreating its former grandeur- including the broad marble and brass staircases, marble and timber paneling, and grandly proportioned rooms. The eight storey building now houses a series of commercial and retail operations- including ground floor retail, and a collection of venues under the House of Roosevelt banner- the rooftop Roosevelt Sky Bar; 8th floor Roosevelt Sky Restaurant; 3rd floor Roosevelt Club (private members-only club); and the 2nd floor Roosevelt Wine Cellar Restaurant.
As the appreciation and consumption of wines continues to evolve in China, the Roosevelt Wine Cellar Restaurant offers both the connoisseur and casual wine drinker an extraordinarily deep selection of wines from all the leading global wine producing regions. Occupying a complete floor of the magnificent House of Roosevelt building, the Roosevelt Wine Cellar boasts a selection of 4,000+ labels and in excess of 20,000 bottles in stock, making it the largest wine cellar in Shanghai. Wines from every recognised wine growing district are showcased in the stunning interior of the Wine Cellar- with prices points starting at very approachable levels- and at the pinnacle- some exceptionally rare vintages priced accordingly.
Weekly Wine Tasting Nights are held on Wednesdays- with attractive selections of wines from particular regions offered for sampling at only RMB148 per person. Guests can browse through the extensive rows of wines and purchase bottles either to take away- or consume on the premises. A selection of 30+ house wines can be ordered by the glass, and a series of table settings are available in each of the regional cellar rooms, and a lounge area at the northern end of the floor space offers a relaxing atmosphere for appreciating fine wines. Guests can order food to compliment the wines from a snacks menu of tapas style dishes, cheeses and charcuterie.
Occupying the third floor of The House of Roosevelt, the Roosevelt Club exemplifies the luxury and exclusivity of a classic city members club. On the floor that originally housed the boardroom and private office suites of the Jardine Matheson directors, The Roosevelt Club have created a series of luxurious private banquet rooms, lounges and Cigar Lounge for the exclusive use of members. Retaining the original wooden flooring, which blends harmoniously with the sophisticated and elegant decor, the grandly proportioned rooms evoke the elite privilege of a bygone era. Members also have access to a secret group of cellar rooms in the Roosevelt Wine Cellars on the floor below- where private collections can be securely stored- or selections made from the Club’s most premier wines.
