Authentic pan-asian cuisines at casual-chic restaurant within the stunning setting of Potato Head Beach Club
October 5th, 2013
One of the most popular lifestyle destinations on Bali’s famed Seminyak coastline, Potato Head Beach Club attracts a discerning clientele of both tourists and local residents with its alluring confluence of stunning architecture, all-day beach club facilities, sophisticated (yet laid back) dining experiences, sumptuous artisanal cocktails, and vibrant nightlife. Housed within the sprawling ampitheatre- shaped pavilion of Potato Head Beach Club are three distinct restaurant concepts, and a cocktail bar and lounge. Complementing the main all-day bistro and bar are both the Lilin restaurant, which serves authentic home cooked pan-asian cuisines, and in an upstairs space- Tapping Shoes– an elegant, modern French culinary experience.
Lilin Design
Referencing the South East Asian heritage of its location, Lilin entices with its masterful renditions of traditional pan-asian home-cooked dishes, within an open-air space that exudes a relaxed, casual-chic aesthetic. The pared-back decor impresses with its elegant simplicity- seating is at a series of long communal wooden benches that span the length of the restaurant, and a multi-faceted blond timber ceiling contrasts pleasingly with the black basalt-paved floor and unfinished concrete pillars. Completely open on three sides, guests enjoy unobstructed views across the lawns and pool deck- while comfortably cooled by the sea breezes off the Indian Ocean.
Lilin Cuisine
The menu at Lilin is a compact selection of authentic dishes- colorful and boldly flavored- created from the meld of culinary influences that contribute to make South East Asian food such a wonderful and varied experience. Dishes are prepared with the traditional ingredients used in home cooked recipes to ensure authenticity, albeit with some contemporary tweaks, and attractive modern presentation. Menu items are assembled under several headings – “Asian Bites”; “Soups & Noodles”; “Main Courses”; and “Satays”. Notable examples from “Small Bites” include Satay Lilit Balinese minced prawn & pork on sugarcane skewers- served with chili sambal; and Papua Coconut Crab Cakes- with green curry sauce and heart of palm salad. And from “Main Courses”- stand out dishes include- Beef Cheek Rendang -slow cooked beef cheeks with local spices and fresh coconut milk; and Roasted Chicken Red Curry – with grapes, pineapple, tomatoes and fresh Thai Basil. Satays are served table-side on a charcoal grill with choices of condiments- with selections from charred Tandoori chicken, grilled wagyu rump, and minced prawn and pork on sugar cane skewer.
Lilin has also recently introduced a Lunch Set promotion- with selections from Asian Bites/Soup & Noodles and Main Courses / Satay, plus rice for Rp 217,500.
Lilin serves lunch and dinner daily- reservations are suggested for peak seasons and weekends.
Lilin Restaurant
Lilin occupies an open-air space at the beach-end of one side of the curving main pavilion. Nestled in between an extension of the beachfront swimming pool and the central expanse of verdant lawn, Lilin is open on all sides to capture the natural light and cooling sea breezes.
Spanning the front of the restaurant- a massive slab of solid timber serves as a communal bench- and offers the perfect vantage to observe everything going on around the main pool and beachfront deck, whilst enjoying the delicious Lilin cuisine.
Most of the table settings within Lilin are at two parallel rows of long communal bench tables, with seating on classic black iron and wood park benches. The restaurant is paved in traditional Balinese-style black basalt stone.
Guests at Lilin can dine in casual comfort whilst enjoying the delightful ocean front views. The blond timber multi-faceted ceiling and raw concrete pillars blend harmoniously within the overall pavilion structure. A vintage timber rowing shell suspended from the ceiling adds a quirky nautical design element.
A sleek, white-tiled serving counter fronts the bar at Lilin.
