Hong Kong’s first brewpub- serving fresh in-house brews, imported craft beers and gastropub cuisine
Update September 2017 – Tipping Point has closed
June 13th, 2014
Passionate beer drinkers in Hong Kong have welcomed the establishment of the city’s first true brewpub- opened in January 2014 and aptly named as the Tipping Point Brewing Co. Served on tap are both the Tipping Point in-house fresh brews, plus a frequently updated selection of imported craft beers. Additional varieties of bottled craft beers- sourced from global artisan brewers, are also available. Standing prominently on the corner of Wyndham and Pottinger Streets, Tipping Point is conveniently located to capture the attention of the nightly throng of office workers heading to Hong Kong’s premier dining and nightlife precinct.
Founded by New York-raised chef Que Vinh Dang, Tipping Point encapsulates his joint passions for food and beer. Taking a culinary approach to traditional brewing practises, Que plans to offer in addition to the classic beers such as pale ale, brown ale, maibock and IPA, experimental small-batch brews based on seasonal culinary ingredients. Supplementing the in-house brews, an impressive list of imported craft beers is continually updated on the blackboards as new bottles or draft beers become available.
Tipping Point opens daily (closed Sundays) from afternoon to late night. Table and party bookings can be made for the upstairs dining room. Regular updates on the latest brews and special promotions can be found on their Facebook Page.
Tipping Point interior
Occupying a double level space, Tipping Point encompasses a main bar and working microbrewery on the ground floor, with dining room and open kitchen on the upper level. A series of large stainless steel fermentation tanks at the rear of the bar space designate the functional microbrewery- patrons are encouraged to engage with staff on the intricacies of beer brewing. Interior decor features a clean, utilitarian approach combining metal and timber surfaces in the bar space, with a warmer feel in the dining room created by the richly toned timber furniture and paneling, matched with a long red leather banquette that spans one wall.
Tipping Point beers & food
In the upstairs dining room, chef Que has constructed a menu of contemporary gastropub dishes such as Scallop Carpaccio with green mango, avocado, pomelo, calamansi vinaigrette; Brisket and Chorizo Shepherd’s Pie with creamy mash potatoes; and Tipping Point Classic 8oz Cheese Burger. At the downstairs bar a blackboard menu of gourmet bar snacks complement the flavours of the fresh-brewed beers- good for sharing and to help soak up the beers.
