Vinyl records and classic-inspired cocktails blend harmoniously at retro-themed bar
June 2nd, 2015
Recently launched amid the bustle of cool cafes and quirky boutiques in Singapore’s uber-hip Haji Lane and Arab Street neighbourhood, LongPlay is a retro-themed bar and lounge that deftly combines the on-trend sensibilities of craft cocktails and the vinyl revival. LongPlay takes its name from the LP album record format that reached its apex during the 1950’s to 80’s period, and is currently enjoying a renaissance among a new generation of discerning audiophiles. Complementing the nostalgic music medium, the LongPlay bar serves up an enticing selection of classic-inspired cocktails, together with a menu of appetizing bar bites. Set within an elongated space that spans two street frontages, warm timber and leather furnishings and subdued lighting exude a relaxed sophistication and set the mood for the multi-sensory appreciation of analog hi-fi music and tantalising beverages.
Another imaginative concept from acclaimed local restaurant and boutique hotel group Unlisted Collection, Long Play exhibits the group’s hallmark meticulous attention to detail – both in design and execution. Connecting back-to-back narrow shophouse spaces has created an interior layout with entrances on two street frontages. At the main Haji Lane entrance, guests can take a seat at the long bar counter that faces into the bar and open kitchen, and beyond the high-fidelity dual turntable deck, amplifier installation, and speakers – the industrial-chic decor transitions to the comfortable lounge space.
Within the lounge section, a series of intimate lounge settings become discreetly semi-private when sheer curtains are extended, while arrayed along the opposite wall, the impressive collection of several thousand vinyl LP records are displayed within steel mesh-fronted cabinets. Daily curated playlists of LP’s feature album recordings from the leading artists of the 1950’s to early 80’s – across genres of pop, rock and soul.
Headlined by the signature cocktails, the drinks list at the bar also features craft beers, wines and premium spirits. Referencing legendary actors and artistes from the period, classic cocktails are reinterpreted with a contemporary flair for imaginative ingredient combinations and well-balanced flavour profiles. The kitchen serves up a concise bar bites menu of small plates that offer tasty accompaniments to the flavourful beverages. Taking a cross-cultural culinary approach, the appetizing comfort dishes and snacks are elevated with local spices and ingredients, and attractive contemporary presentation.
LongPlay opens Tuesday to Saturday from 6 pm, and on Sunday from 4 pm (closed Mondays). The compact interior seats 15 at the bar counter, with another 35 seats in the lounge section. Check the LongPlay Facebook Page for updates on special events and promotions.
