Casual all-day dining and vibrant bar – contemporary interpretation of classic French crêperie
June 29th, 2015
Simply and aptly named Ô Comptoir (bar or counter in French) – the chic creperie-inspired bistro and bar in Singapore stands out among the plethora of neighbouring bars and eateries with its appealing menu of flavoursome crêpes, galettes and classic brasserie dishes, and French-centric bar list. Casual and relaxed during the day, Ô Comptoir is popular among the city crowd for lunch, afternoon crêpes and coffee, while in the evenings the mood becomes more upbeat as after-work drinks transition into a vibrant scene with live DJ’s and the fashionable clientele spilling out onto the covered walkways until late. Weekly themed promotion nights, plus regular special events and parties highlight an active social program at Ô Comptoir.
Design Founded last year by the French couple behind the successful Club Street wine bar Ô Batignolles, at Ô Comptoir they have transformed a compact triangular corner shophouse space in the Boat Quay neighbourhood into a vibrant bar and casual all-day bistro. Open on both sides, the interior is bathed with natural light and cooling breezes, while hints of France in the decor reference the heritage of a traditional crêperie. A triangular shaped bar stands prominently at the apex of the corner space, while high tables extend along both sides of the terracotta paved shophouse walkways. Indoor seating includes a substantial communal table, cosy turquoise leather banquette setting, plus a handful of small tables.
Cuisine Authentic buckwheat galettes define the culinary identity of Ô Comptoir – with the quintessential French savoury dishes elevated with cosmopolitan flavour combinations cross-pollinated from local cuisines. Classic galettes include the Ménage à 3 – made with Emmental cheese, ham, sunny side up egg; while the Chase the Spices galette adds local culinary ingredients. Traditional wheat flour sweet crêpes include the Normandy Landing – with homemade salted butter caramel filling. A concise brasserie menu section comprises classic dishes such as Roasted Chicken with creamy polenta and parmesan; and Scallops with green beans and sweet potatoes.
Drinks Headlining the drinks list at Ô Comptoir is a well-priced selection of boutique French dry ciders – apple, pear, and semi-sweet rosé – originating from the Normandy region in western France where crêpes and galettes are traditionally served with local ciders. A strong selection of small-producer French wines and champagnes add depth to the drink options, while cocktails include well-executed classics, plus French-influenced specialties such as the Normandy – made with Calvados, cider, and honey syrup.
Ô Comptoir is open daily – on weekdays from 11am – and on weekends from 10am for the popular Weekend Brunch promotion. Table reservations are recommended in the evenings – upcoming promotions and events can be found on the Ô Comptoir Facebook Page.
