Casual beach shack-style restaurant serves New American cuisine amid retro decor & street art
October 8th, 2015
Overlooking the white sand and blue waters of Repulse Bay on Hong Kong Island provides the idyllic setting for new beachfront restaurant Hotshot. Taking its cues from the Californian beach culture circa 1960’s, Hotshot exudes a relaxed informality with its retro decor and beach shack vibe. Elevating the beach shack dining experience, the retro cafe decor is juxtaposed with rare vintage surfboards and an outstanding collection of works by famed street artists referencing the linked beachfront origins of skateboarding. Serving a menu of New American cuisine, diners can expect uplifted renditions of classic American dishes, complemented with nostalgic beachside beverages such as milkshakes and ice cream floats, as well as American craft beers and refreshing cocktails. Opened mid-year by Le Comptoir – the group behind both the acclaimed fine dining and art-intensive Bibo restaurant – Hotshot offers an inviting destination for drop-in all-day bites and refreshments, while weekend DJs add an upbeat dimension to casual evening dining.
Design Occupying a beachfront space at the chic beachfront lifestyle complex The Pulse, a double height glass facade suffuses the interior with natural light and terrific beachside views. Designed with the same meticulous attention to detail evident at sibling art-centric restaurant Bibo, the distinctive interior melds an eclectic assemblage of works by notable street artists such as Kaws and Invader, with the array of rare vintage surfboards and skateboards decorated by Jeff Koons, while an exquisitely restored 1951 Silver Stream trailer designed by the Airstream founder is parked inside the entrance and serves as a drinks truck.
Food Hotshot Executive Chef Wes Long has extensive experience cooking in a number of America’s top ranking fine-dining restaurants and brings to Hotshot both well-honed technique and an appreciation of New American cuisine. Standout dishes created for the Hotshot menu by Long include a Prime beef cheeseburger; Deep fried buttermilk free range chicken breast;oven-roasted Maine lobster; and pan-seared diver scallops. Weekend brunches on the beachfront are always popular – and the recently launched brunch menu offers healthy nourishment with Granola parfait with house made granola, and comfort classics such as the 10 0z ribeye steak and 2 eggs any style with french fries.
Drinks Beverages served out of the Silver Stream trailer range from milkshakes and ice cream floats, to American craft beers and wines, plus a compact list of creative cocktails like the Malibu – with New Grove Spiced Rum, vanilla ice cream, and homemade spiced strawberry syrup.
Hotshot opens Wednesday through Sunday, serving both lunch and dinner; while burgers from the takeaway counter are a hot item on the weekends. Menus are updated seasonally, and special promotions are highlighted on the Hotshot Facebook Page.
