Convivial retro-themed Chinese restaurant melds traditional Cantonese cuisine with contemporary vibe
November 7th, 2016
Located within Bali’s mega-popular Seminyak dining and lifestyle enclave, Happy Chappy Chinese serves the familiar Chinese comfort dishes typically found in Western Chinatown restaurants. The cheekily named Happy Chappy combines inspiration from classic Kung Fu movies with contemporary renditions of traditional Cantonese cuisine to create an appealing environment for sociable dining and drinks. Open since 2015, Happy Chappy offers an attractive combination of approachable prices and flavourful dishes – with relaxed lunches, and vibrant evening drinks and dining in the expansive dining room and adjoining Dragon’s Den bar ensuring a regular clientele of both local residents and visiting tourists.
Design A well-executed design evokes traditional Chinese architecture with its brown brick and tiled roof construction, Red Moon Gate door entrance, and predominantly red-toned interior surfaces. Meticulously decorated, the high-ceilinged main dining room features well-spaced retro-styled timber dining chairs and tables, dark red leather curved banquette settings – and highlighted throughout with familiar Chinese decorative elements. In a separate space adjacent to the main dining room, the Dragon’s Den bar is furnished in dark timbers, traditional woven carpets, and leather Chesterfields, to recreate an underground lounge vibe.
Cantonese cuisine Guests at Happy Chappy can expect a menu replete with simple yet attractively plated Cantonese-inspired dishes. Among the popular items on the menu are the Peking Duck; platters of steamed or fried Dim Sum; whole steamed fresh fish; and Kung Pao Pork. The Dim Sum Sunday brunch is a weekly highlight – with a 2-for-1 Bloody Mary trolley always a hit. At the bar, signature cocktails on the drinks list take on a Chinese theme – exemplified by the China Doll – with Bourbon, Chambord, oolong tea and Szechuan pepper syrup, lime juice, lemon juice, cranberry juice. Classic cocktails and an enticing martini selection are supplemented with a thoughtfully-curated selection of wines, champagne, and beers.
Happy Chappy opens daily – with lunch served between 11am and 2:30pm, and nightly dinner service from 6pm. Table bookings are advised for the indoor dining room, and the Dim Sum Sunday brunches are always busy. Check the Facebook Page for updates on regular live music performances in the bar, and menu promotions.
