Craft and Asian-inspired cocktails at refurbished colonial-era bar at Chiang Mai boutique hotel
March 28th, 2017
Set within the original teak homestead at the 137 Pillars House boutique hotel, Jack Bain’s Bar references the colourful history of the late 19th Century building, deftly complemented with a contemporary understated sophistication. A relaxing haven within the boutique hotel, the bar focuses on craft cocktails – inspired by both colonial and Asian influences. Originally dating back to the late 19th century, the vintage teak building has been incorporated into the luxurious resort and hotel – evoking an elegant colonial-era lifestyle. The newly established bar has become one an attractive destination in Chiang Mai for premium libations and relaxed conversations. The bar takes its name from the scion of a Scottish family that occupied the homestead from the late 1800’s.
Design Ensconced within warm teak walls, flooring and hand-carved ceilings, the cosy interior epitomises the renowned colonial era charm of 19th Century Chiang Mai. Within the comfortable bar layout, guests can choose between a seat at the plush, padded leather bar, or at the well-spaced armchair and lounge settings. Adjacent to the bar, further seating is available on the covered terraces overlooking tropical gardens.
Cocktails The bar team have created a concise cocktail list of both contemporary renditions of classic cocktails and signature craft cocktails inspired by both retro and local Thai culinary influences. Signature cocktails such as The Teak with whiskey, sweet vermouth, orange bitter, and fresh grapefruit; and The Legend of Pillar a combination of dark rum, butter, ground sugar cane, nut mage, and cinnamon powder reference the historic origins of the hotel, while classic cocktails feature premium spirits combined with local ingredients to create refreshing libations like Mint Julep; Negroni and Old Fashioned. A menu of bar snacks offers flavorful accompaniments – try the Roasted Blue Cheese pizza or the Mini Veggie Burgers.
Jack Bain’s Bar opens daily from 5 pm until 11:30 pm, with a daily Happy Hour promotion between 5 pm and 7 pm.
