Acclaimed speakeasy-style bar in Bangkok celebrates classic cocktails
January 5th, 2019
Established in 2017, Bangkok’s speak-easy themed bar #Find The Locker Room quickly garnered widespread acclaim for its meticulously crafted cocktails – and unpretentious vibe. Conceived by a pan-Asian team of high-profile friends from the bartending industry – Colin Chia (Nutmeg & Clove, Singapore), Hidetsugu Ueno (Bar High Five, Tokyo), Nick Wu (East End, Taipei), and local Bangkok partners Ronnaporn “Neung” Kanivichaporn and Chennarong “Jan” Bhumichitr (Backstage Bar, Bangkok) – #Find The Locker Room focussed on serving polished renditions of classic cocktails – together with the bar team’s creative reinterpretations.
Relocated during 2018 – the new iteration of #Find The Locker Room – although situated along the bustling Soi Thonglor – remains a challenging discovery for first-time visitors. An unmarked narrow passageway leads from the street frontage to a small alcove lined with steel lockers – guests then have a further challenge to gain entry. Inside, the two-level space offers guests the choice of the Main Bar (25 seats) on the upper level – and the intimate Remy Bar (8-12 seats) on the lower level.
The cocktail program at the new bars is centred around a concise menu of classic cocktails – each offered in three versions – “Classic”; “Present” and “Future”. The “Classics” are the curated by Ueno-san, while Colin Chia is behind the “Present” creations, and with Nick Wu, Neung and Jan all having a hand in the imaginative “Future ” creations. Among the list of Classics are favourites such as Mint Julep; Pina Colada; Rob Roy; and Sidecar.
Exemplifying the variations on each classic cocktail – Pina Colada – the mid-20th Century tropical favourite – the “Classic” is presented as a mix of dark rum, pineapple juice and coconut cream. While the “Present” version – Sawadee Colada – features a twist on the original recipe with tequila reposado substituting the white rum, mixed with fresh lemon and pineapple juices, coconut milk – and garnished with kaffir lime leaves and lemongrass. And for the “Future” – the Ice Cold Pina takes an imaginative leap with the combination of coconut and pandan infused vodka combined with blue-pea infused and carbonated coconut water, topped with a pineapple mango sorbet.
At the Remy Bar – the focus is on elegant and sophisticated cocktails featuring Remy Martin VSOP.
#Find The Locker Room opens daily from 6 pm – reservations for seats at the bar are recommended.
