New Bangkok restaurant and bar inspired by the life experiences of the legendary Jim Thompson
February 9th, 2019
Legendary traveller, curator, artist and silk industry entrepreneur, Jim Thompson was a man of refined taste and extravagant hospitality in mid-century Thailand. Reflecting his cosmopolitan lifestyle – Spirit Jim Thompson – is the latest addition to the collection of Jim Thompson restaurants in Bangkok. Conceived as an expression of the “spirit” of Jim Thompson – Spirit is a refined dining destination that embraces authentic Thai cuisine while referencing the influences of his eclectic lifestyle.
Enlisting the services of architectural and design firm Boiffils Studio, two residential bungalows in central Bangkok has been transformed into an urban oasis of sophisticated dining and relaxed hospitality. Surrounded by an expansive green garden and lush tropical plants, the main dining room enjoys a garden outlook through floor-to-ceiling glass windows, while silk-covered pivoting dividers can create more intimate private spaces. Traditional Thai furnishings – with a contemporary aesthetic – were inspired by the original Jim Thompson House – complementing the tropical hardwood timber flooring and furniture. Adjoining the main restaurant, a covered timber deck patio accommodates outdoor table settings and bar area for casual dining and drinks experiences.
Heading up the culinary team at Spirit – Chef Montri Virojnvechapant, a former chef to the Royal court has created an inspired menu that references authentic Thai cuisine based on rediscovered rare recipes – with many local ingredients sourced directly from the Jim Thompson Farm in northeastern Thailand. Chef Montri deftly respects refined combinations of traditional Thai flavours while adding elements of modern culinary technique and presentation to create a collection of tasteful dishes that takes diners on a culinary journey through the Thai kingdom and neighbouring countries.
At the outdoor bar, guests can enjoy signature cocktails like the Royal Thai – a fresh mix of Tanqueray gin, orange and basil syrup. While other interesting drinks include Thai Goddess with lemongrass-infused vodka, lime and pineapple juice, egg white and angostura bitters, and the refreshing Lord Jim’s Mojito is crafted with dark rum, mint, lemon juice and bitters. Other beverages available include a curated selection of wines, beers, and premium spirits.
Spirit Jim Thompson opens daily for lunch and dinner, with an evening Happy Hour at the outdoor bar an enticing option for pre-dinner drinks.
