Modern Chinese comfort dining, urban mini-farm & Chinese herb inflected cocktails at PMQ cultural hub
February 28th, 2015
Compatibly located within the hip PMQ creative lifestyle complex in Central, Sohofama deftly channels the healthy and environmentally-aware consciousness of contemporary Hong Kong urbanites. A thoughtful combination of urban mini-farm, casual Chinese restaurant and creative cocktail bar, Sohofama occupies a spacious outdoor and indoor section of the ground floor level in the rear block of the PMQ complex. Serving traditional local Chinese comfort dishes, complemented with selections of modern cross-culturally inspired dishes, the kitchen at Sohofama cook only with fresh, locally grown, organic and chemical free produce, including vegetables and herbs grown in the on-site garden beds. In harmony with the cuisine sensibility, the Sohofama Bar offers an imaginative drinks concept that draws from traditional Chinese farming and social culture to create tasteful concoctions that combine locally brewed rice wines, herbal and Western ingredients.
Sohofama is the latest venture from the team behind the trend-setting Locofama organic cafe and market, in collaboration at PMQ with trendy local lifestyle brand and retailer G.O.D.. Guests can choose between casual seating in the outdoor garden setting, or in the air-conditioned indoor dining spaces. The decor inside presents a distinctive blend of contemporary industrial-chic and retro Hong Kong cultural influences. Overlooking the main dining room, the cocktail bar exudes the presence of a traditional herbal medicine shop overlaid onto a contemporary well-stocked bar.
In creating the unique cocktail concept, Sohofama cocktail master and mixologist Kit Cheung has drawn on his 12 years experience in the UK bar scene to underscore sound technique with his understanding of local Hong Kong culture. Collaborating with a 70-year-old Hong Kong rice wine brewery – Yuet Wo Limited – Cheung has crafted a range of signature cocktails using their local rice wines as the base. Infusing rice wine with Chinese herbs and fruits, signature cocktails like the Orange Peel Porridge reveal both a distinct taste profile and local cultural connection.
The rewarding menu at Sohofama features an assemblage of mostly familiar Hong Kong and Chinese wholesome family-style dishes, made from fresh produce grown at local New Territories farms, and trusted organic sources. Dishes that exemplify the culinary philosophy of Locofama include the 24hr Chilled Drunken Fresh Local Prawns; Local Caught Mud Crab with Sticky Fried Rice; and US Natural Pork Chop Szechuan Tam Tam Noodles.
Sohofama opens daily from 12 pm, serving food and drinks until late.
