Speakeasy-inspired bars have been at the forefront of KL’s bar scene in recent years – catering specifically to an increasingly discerning and knowledgeable local clientele. Among the pioneering speakeasy bars in KL, Tate (opened back in 2011) has maintained impressive popularity notwithstanding the opening of numerous similarly speakeasy-themed bars. Embracing the modern-day speakeasy bar aesthetic that evolved in the early 2000’s in London and NYC, Tate is characterised by an unmarked entrance, a dimly lit but upscale interior, and stellar cocktails crafted by knowledgeable and passionate bartenders. In-the-know patrons can select their libations from polished renditions of classic prohibition-era and signature cocktails, whiskies from the impressive collection of single malts and rare vintages, and premium quality wines and champagnes. Complementing the fine whiskies, cigar aficionados are also well catered for with an extensive range of top-shelf cigars – including rare limited editions – housed in the large glass-fronted humidor room.

Conveniently located in the main downtown business district, Tate can be found on the ground level of The Intermark building. The only hint to its discrete entrance is a small black top hat suspended in front of an unmarked door. Outfitted along the lines of a colonial-era British gentlemen’s club, the interior is heavy on dark timber paneling, plush chesterfield sofas and plush armchairs. In addition to the main lounge and bar areas, a series of three intimate private rooms offer enhanced privacy and exclusivity for small groups.  Wall-mounted flat screens playing 1920’s silent movies reference the prohibition era, while a collection of boxing memorabilia pays homage to Muhammad Ali.

Well-executed classic cocktails headline the extensive drinks list at Tate. Crafted from premium spirits, homemade syrups and fresh ingredients – standout drinks include the classic Daisy, made with premium gin, chartreuse jaune, pomegranate and lemon; and from signature “Fancy” cocktails – Firewood, a well-balanced combination of scotch, vermouth and cacao, served with a flaming cinnamon stick. Gourmet bar snacks are welcome accompaniments to the solid libations, popular plates include the Decadent Wagyu Baby Burgers, Lobster Rolls, and Truffle Mac n’ Cheese.

Tate opens Monday to Saturday (closed on Sundays) from 5 pm until 2 am. Reservations are strongly recommended for nights later in the week.
